The Netherlands barely meets the NATO standard, but finds it difficult to spend more on defense: 'Enormous challenge'

Further steps to raise the standard may be taken at the NATO summit in The Hague in June this year.

"Let me just say it: I think it's crazy that the big NATO summit is being organized in the Netherlands this summer," Mayor Sjors Fröhlich wrote in a letter in the Volkskrant on Saturday. Fröhlich is concerned about the consequences of the summit for police deployment in his municipality. "We will be losing police officers for months throughout the Netherlands for the police duties on behalf of our residents."
