Jamie Dornan Admits Problem With Replacing Viggo Mortensen in 'LOTR' Prequel

The prequel is recasting Aragorn because Viggo Mortensen was unlikely to return without costly de-aging effects, producers said.

  • Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema confirmed Irish actor Jamie Dornan will play Aragorn in 'The Hunt for Gollum,' with the prequel film scheduled for December 17, 2027, replacing Viggo Mortensen in the role.
  • The film takes place before 'The Fellowship,' requiring a younger actor; Mortensen would have needed expensive de-aging VFX to portray Strider, making Dornan's casting the more practical choice.
  • Dornan told L'Officiel magazine, "I've been asked to play a super-iconic role, and I'll do my best. But for me, Aragorn will always be just Viggo," adding he feels "honored to try to recapture at least some of the energy" Mortensen brought.
  • Director Andy Serkis returns as Gollum while helming the project, joined by Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, and newcomers Kate Winslet, Leo Woodall, Lee Pace, and Anya Taylor-Joy.
  • Beyond this project, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are developing a Fourth Age film titled 'Shadow of the Past,' set years after 'Return of the King,' which Peter Jackson confirmed remains in active development.
