EU Strategy Aims to Make Europe Leader in Quantum by 2030
- On 2 July 2025, the European Commission introduced its Quantum Strategy with the goal of establishing the EU as a leading force in quantum technologies by 2030.
- The strategy responds to challenges including fragmented national approaches and limited private funding, with EU firms attracting only 5% of global quantum investment.
- It targets five areas: research and innovation, infrastructures, ecosystem strengthening, dual-use technologies, and skills, with plans for pilot chip lines and a design facility supported by €50 million.
- Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen highlighted that these technologies will significantly transform Europe’s economic landscape, enhance its security measures, and improve the methods used to address challenging issues, while underscoring the continent’s swift progress and strong research capabilities.
- The strategy will be followed by a Quantum Act in 2026 to reinforce ecosystem resilience, incentivize investments, and accelerate market-ready quantum innovations across the EU.
