On September 12, the Belarusian authorities, as a result of negotiations with the United States, released 52 political prisoners. 51 of them were deported across the border, and some had their passports taken away. Politician Mikola Statkevich refused to leave Belarus. Human rights activists and lawyers were asked why it was important for the authorities to push these people out of Belarus.
