The measure banning the wearing of headscarves in schools is expected to come into effect in the 2026/27 school year, said Claudia Plakolm of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP).

Constitutional law practitioners remain skeptical about the introduction of a headscarf ban for girls. In 2019 the VfGH overturned such a law. Since then, the initial situation has changed considerably and the law has been thoroughly revised, the government responds.
Austria will ban girls under the age of 14 from wearing headscarves in schools starting next year, Minister for Family, Youth, EU and Integration Claudia Plakolm announced today. She said parliament will soon consider the law that will introduce the ban, German news agency dpa reported.
