THAILAND, JUL 26 – More than 138,000 people have been displaced as clashes escalate along 12 border locations, with the death toll surpassing previous conflicts since 2008, the United Nations reported.
- On Thursday, a long-running border dispute erupted into intense conflict involving jets, artillery, tanks and ground troops along the shared 800km border, prompting an emergency UN Security Council meeting yesterday.
- A UN court ruling in 2013 settled the border dispute for over a decade, but tensions reignited in May after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a new clash.
- Amid the clashes, over 35,000 people have been displaced in Cambodia, and Cambodia's defence ministry reported 13 killed, including eight civilians and five soldiers.
- Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said both countries had agreed to a ceasefire, while global actors including the United States called for an "immediate cessation of hostilities, protection of civilians and a peaceful resolution of the conflict".
- After a closed-door meeting on Friday, the UN Security Council called on both sides to exercise the utmost restraint and to resolve the issue through diplomacy, AFP reported.

Thai-Cambodia clashes spread along frontier as death toll rises
Thailand and Cambodia exchanged heavy artillery fire for a third straight day Saturday, as a border conflict that has killed at least 33 people and displaced more than 150,000 from their homes spread across the frontier.
In a message on behalf of the small Cambodian Catholic community on the ongoing fights with Thailand, Msgr. Olivier Schmitthaeusler calls for respect for international law and invites all parishes to pray for governments to find a "friendly, sustainable and just" solution. Still crossed accusations between the two countries, while some missiles also rained in Laos. Over 30 dead and 200 thousand displaced.
Clashes on the disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia entered their third day Saturday, with more than 160,000 people displaced by the fighting and dozens injured, according to officials from both countries.
