Thai ex-PM Thaksin to be released from prison next month

Thailand's former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be released on parole May 11, the Corrections Department said on Wednesday. The 76-year-old is serving a one-year corruption sentence at Bangkok's Klong Prem Central Prison.
After returning from self-exile in 2023, Thaksin began serving an eight-year sentence, later reduced to one year by royal pardon. The Supreme Court ruled he improperly served time in a hospital suite rather than a prison cell.
Shinawatra is one of more than 850 prisoners approved for early release on Wednesday. He will "need to comply with all conditions" until his probation ends, including wearing an electronic monitor, the Department stated.
His Pheu Thai party currently serves in the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, with Thaksin's nephew Yodchanan Wongsawat holding a cabinet position. This arrangement has fueled public suspicion regarding allegations of special treatment for the former leader.
For two decades, Thailand's pro-military elite have viewed the Shinawatra political clan as a threat to the traditional social order. But Pheu Thai achieved its worst election result ever in February, raising questions about the future of the party's political machine.
