Texas Republicans Launch 'Sharia-Free America Caucus'
Texas Republicans launched the caucus amid efforts to label Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as terrorist groups and propose barring Sharia observers from the U.S., citing constitutional concerns.
- On Thursday, Chip Roy and Keith Self launched a Sharia-Free America Caucus in the U.S. House, following their October Preserving a Sharia-Free America Act filing.
- Last month, Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, issued three directives designating the Muslim Brotherhood and Council on American-Islamic Relations as FTOs and ordered Texas Department of Public Safety to investigate them and an Islamic tribunal in north Texas in Keith Self's district.
- U.S. Sen. John Cornyn introduced legislation to let the U.S. Department of the Treasury revoke tax-exempt status for groups he says support terrorism, while a two-page bill targets foreign nationals observing Sharia.
- CAIR and the Muslim Legal Fund of America sued Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, arguing his directives are unconstitutional while under federal tax law the IRS suspends tax-exempt status if designated an FTO with notification and review.
- Roy and Self say the measures counter an alarming rise of Sharia Law they argue is incompatible with the U.S. Constitution, while allied officials claim CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood threaten sovereignty, with Ted Cruz refiling related legislation.
