Texas man charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS in federal terrorism case
John Michael Garza Jr. sent bomb components and cryptocurrency to undercover agents he believed were ISIS affiliates, facing up to 20 years in prison, authorities said.
- John Michael Garza Jr., a Midlothian, Texas resident, was charged after bringing bomb-making materials to a Dec. 22 meeting he believed involved ISIS.
- After online contact, John Michael Garza Jr. told a New York City Police Department undercover employee he supported ISIS ideology and sent small amounts of cryptocurrency believing they would fund ISIS causes.
- At the meeting, Garza handed explosive components and nails, described how to mix them, and offered to send an instructional bomb-building video to the FBI undercover agent.
- Garza's initial court appearance was Dec. 23, a probable cause hearing is set for Dec. 30, and FBI Director Kash Patel said, 'The FBI identified the threat early, tracked it aggressively, and shut it down before anyone was harmed.'
- The Department of Justice said multiple agencies, including the FBI's Dallas Field Office and the New York City Police Department, assisted in the investigation, praising law enforcement efforts and warning against violent ideologies.
