Texas LB Ty’Anthony Smith dismissed from program
Steve Sarkisian said the junior linebacker was dismissed after returning to practice this week following shoulder surgery.
On Saturday, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed the dismissal of junior linebacker Ty'Anthony Smith for "conduct detrimental to the team," providing no further elaboration on the specific circumstances.
Smith leaves the Longhorns after two seasons, having appeared in 29 games with one start while recording 76 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, and three interceptions during his tenure.
Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods noted Smith's practice participation was inconsistent in recent weeks. Sarkisian said, "For us as a team, I hate that. He's a quality player, but I have to think about the team first."
Transfer linebackers Rasheem Biles from Pitt and Justin Cryer from Florida State now compete for starting roles, while Brad Spence provides experience and positional flexibility to the linebacker rotation.
With Texas's season opener against Texas State arriving in less than three weeks, Sarkisian noted remaining players must grow into larger roles following departures to the NFL and the transfer portal.
