Quebec woman who left Canada to join ISIS pleads guilty to terrorism offence
QUEBEC, CANADA, JUL 21 – Oumaima Chouay received a sentence including probation after pleading guilty to supporting ISIS through marriage and family roles, with experts rating her risk of reoffending as very low.
- On Monday, Oumaima Chouay pleaded guilty to one count of participating in ISIS activities, receiving one day behind bars, 110 days pretrial detention and three years probation.
- According to court documents, Chouay anticipated a role married to an ISIS fighter and child rearing under its doctrine, and on Feb. 2, 2015 she posted the Islamic State flag as her Facebook profile photo.
- The Integrated National Security Enforcement Team assessed she poses no significant danger to Canadian society, while independent experts concluded her recidivism risk is very low.
- The Public Prosecution Service of Canada noted she is the first person convicted for family-related support to a terrorist group, and said she must undergo depolarization therapy and avoid extremist contacts.
- On Oct. 25, 2022, she was arrested by the RCMP at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport after returning from a Syrian detention camp with her two children, RCMP says, after being held by the Syrian Democratic Forces at the Roj Camp long ago.
