Tenaris Unveils $306M Modernization Plan for Its Sault Operation
Ontario and Ottawa are backing the modernization with $148 million in funding as Tenaris says the project will strengthen domestic steel supply.
On Friday, Tenaris announced a $306 million investment to modernize its Sault Ste. Marie steel pipe facility, adding 200 jobs to the existing 800-person workforce.
Industry Minister Melanie Joly and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced over $148 million in government funding to strengthen domestic steel production amid U.S. tariffs.
The modernization will increase manufacturing output by 80 per cent, which Tenaris Canada president Martin Castro called an "important step forward" in the company's 25-year history.
Welcoming the investment, United Steelworkers National Director Marty Warren stated, "This is good news for Sault Ste. Marie and a positive step toward making more of what Canada needs right here at home."
Supporting over 800,000 workers, Ontario's manufacturing sector aligns with government efforts to reduce reliance on foreign steel through Buy Canadian procurement rules.
