Teenage boy found not guilty of murdering Aria Thorpe, nine, in Somerset
Jurors found the 16-year-old not guilty after hearing he said he meant to scare Aria Thorpe, who died from a single stab wound.
A 16-year-old defendant was cleared by a jury at Bristol Crown Court on Thursday of murder and manslaughter charges in the death of nine-year-old Aria Thorpe.
Aria died last December in her North Somerset home after the teenager, who had been visiting, jabbed a 21cm knife toward her to "scare" her.
Pathologist Dr. Amanda Jeffery told the jury the fatal injury, which pierced Aria's heart, was between 7.5 and 8cm deep and caused death "very swiftly."
The teenager fled to Worle railway station after the incident, where he told a group of children the death was an "accident" before police were alerted via 999.
During the trial, jurors heard the defendant demonstrate a ninja-style move while fencing with the knife, though he insisted the injury occurred accidentally while trying to get a reaction.
