Taiwan says 2 dead in military training plane crash
The Air Force launched an investigation and will review the aircraft’s mechanical condition, training procedures and safety measures after the crash.
On Tuesday, a T-34 trainer aircraft crashed at 8:08 a.m. at the northern end of the runway at Gangshan Air Base in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, killing both pilots during a simulated engine failure training mission.
The Air Force identified the two pilots as Lieutenant Colonel Lu Chi-yu and Lieutenant Colonel Kuo Chun-nan, both highly experienced with more than 2,000 flight hours each in the T-34.
President William Lai told reporters in Taipei he was "deeply saddened by this sudden tragedy," thanking the pilots for their "sacrifice and dedication" to Taiwan.
Minister of National Defense Wellington Koo instructed the Air Force to assist the pilots' families and conduct a thorough investigation; Premier Cho Jung-tai announced a task force to review training procedures.
The crash marks another serious aviation incident involving Taiwan's military, following an F-16 fighter jet disappearance off the island's east coast in January during a routine training mission.
