Taijul puts Bangladesh on brink of Test series win over Pakistan
On Tuesday, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam claimed 4-113 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, moving Bangladesh within three wickets of a series sweep against Pakistan. The tourists ended day four at 316-7, chasing an improbable 437 for victory.
Bangladesh set the 437-run target after scoring 390 in their second innings, featuring a 137-run contribution from Mushfiqur Rahim. The target ranks among the rarest chases attempted in Test cricket.
A 134-run sixth-wicket partnership between Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha frustrated the hosts before Taijul broke the stand, removing Agha and Hasan Ali. The resistance momentarily revived Pakistan's hopes.
Pakistan batting coach Asad Shafiq said, "There is hope, of course," citing confidence in his batting unit. Bangladesh's Australian bowling coach Shaun Tait called Taijul's performance a "warrior effort."
Heading into the fifth and final day in Sylhet, Pakistan requires 121 runs to win. A successful chase would surpass the Test record of 418, marking the highest successful run chase in cricket history.
