Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa paid tribute Wednesday to Pope Francis on Wednesday, saying he had supported the Syrian people "during their darkest moments".

The leader of the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS) has emphasized that Francis "raised his voice with fervor against the suffering and injustice he suffered" the Syrian population. "His appeals transcended political borders, and his legacy of moral fervor and compassion will endure in the hearts of many in our homeland," says a statement.
