Syrian forces withdraw from Sweida after ceasefire goes into effect
SWEIDA, SYRIA, JUL 21 – The ceasefire followed a week of clashes that killed at least 718 people, with mediation by the US, Turkey, and Arab countries ending Syrian army operations in Sweida.
- Withdrawing its troops, Syria declared on Wednesday it would leave Suwayda province, and the Syrian presidency announced an immediate, comprehensive ceasefire on July 19.
- Against a backdrop of mounting sectarian tensions, systematic violence erupted against the Druze minority after a Druze merchant was abducted and robbed on the Damascus-Suwayda highway.
- Amid clashes, mass graves and full hospitals underscore the crisis, with the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reporting nearly 1,000 killed, including 588 Druze civilians, and 87,000 displaced, according to the United Nations.
- On July 18, an Israeli official said Syrian forces would be allowed limited access to Sweida for two days, after Israel launched airstrikes against Syrian government forces in Suwayda and Damascus.
- Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced security responsibility in Suwayda would transfer to religious elders and local factions, and the presidency designated safe exit routes through Busra al-Harir and Busra al-Sham crossings.
