Not-so-Hot Pursuit of Burglary Suspect Sees Police Cars Chase Tractor Excavator at Walking Pace
- South Carolina police chased a 53-year-old man driving a tractor excavator on U.S. Highway 78 in North Charleston early Sunday morning.
- The chase followed a burglary call about a heavily damaged business and began when officers saw the excavator crossing the highway around 3:30 a.m.
- Officers used sirens, blue lights, and loudspeakers to instruct the excavator driver to stop, but the pursuit lasted 1 hour and 12 minutes at speeds around 3 mph.
- Authorities apprehended Johnny Mesa and charged him with not stopping for emergency vehicle signals as well as two separate offenses involving intentional damage to property, setting his bond at $22,000.
- The driver tried to flee on Charleston County Fairgrounds property but was caught by a police dog and handler, leaving Mesa in custody at the county jail.
