Suspect indicted on attempted murder charge in explosives attack on Japan's Kishida, report says

  • A 24-year-old man in Japan has been indicted on attempted murder and other charges for an explosive attack on Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during his election campaign in Wakayama. Kishida was unharmed, but two others suffered minor injuries. Prosecutors have determined that the bomb used in the attack was lethal.
  • The suspect, Ryuji Kimura, underwent a three-month psychiatric evaluation and was found mentally fit for trial. According to court records, Kimura may have been motivated by anger over not being able to file for candidacy in elections the previous year.
  • This attack comes a year after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot and killed while campaigning for elections. Gun and bomb violence are extremely rare in Japan, making these attacks shocking incidents.
