Suspect Charged with Arson at Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s Toronto Home
Police arrested a 24-year-old suspect and are seeking a second person after three vehicles were damaged in the alleged arson, officials said.
Toronto Police Service arrested Roshvin Crofton, 24, on Sunday, August 30, 2026, charging him with arson at the home of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East Liberal Member Salma Zahid.
The arson occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, in the Bellamy Road North and Lawrence Avenue East area, where multiple vehicles were set ablaze at Zahid's residence.
Investigators released surveillance video showing a suspect pouring fuel on five vehicles, while police continue searching for a second suspect and a black 2025 Hyundai Sonata used in the incident.
Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the act as a "cowardly act of violence and intimidation," while Zahid expressed relief that she and her family remain safe despite the incident.
Crofton faces charges including mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, and failure to comply with a probation order, with a court appearance scheduled for next week.
