Sudan relief operations are ‘on the brink of collapse,’ UN migration agency warns
Humanitarian aid in North Darfur is nearly depleted with warehouses empty and convoys insecure, leaving millions at risk as 12 million are displaced, the International Organization for Migration said.
- On Tuesday, the International Organization for Migration warned relief work in the North Darfur region could halt without immediate funding, as warehouses run nearly empty and aid convoys face insecurity.
- According to WHO figures, the war began in 2023 after tensions between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, who had been allies during a 2019 transition, with at least 40,000 killed and nearly 39,000 displaced, IOM warned of `an even greater catastrophe` without urgent aid.
- Tens of thousands have arrived at overcrowded camps in Tawila, about 70 kilometers from el-Fasher, where tents, food and medical supplies are scarce, and volunteers like Batoul Mohamed say, `The displaced are too many; they are also hungry.`
- Nearly 39,000 people fled North Kordofan from Oct. 26 to Nov. 9, and displaced people undertaking perilous journeys face no access to food, water or medical assistance, worsening their needs.
- The IOM said more funding is needed and warned of `an even greater catastrophe` if aid efforts in North Darfur are not urgently supported.
