Drone Strikes Kill Nearly 900 Sudan Civilians This Year, UN Says
The UN said drones caused 880 civilian deaths in four months and warned that attacks on markets and clinics are spreading across the country.
On Monday, May 11, 2026, the United Nations human rights office reported drone strikes killed at least 880 civilians between January and April, accounting for 80% of all conflict-related deaths.
Both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have used drones extensively, with a May 8 strike on Al Quoz and near El-Obeid killing 26 civilians and injuring others.
Repeated attacks have targeted markets at least 28 times and health facilities at least 12 times during the four-month period, compounding suffering amid diminishing access to food and water.
Human Rights Chief Volker Turk warned that the conflict is "on the cusp of entering yet another new, even deadlier phase," calling the situation an "abandoned crisis."
Expanding hostilities in the coming weeks risk "lethal consequences for civilians across enormous areas," Turk warned, as parties seek to consolidate territory amid shifting conflict dynamics.
High Commissioner Volker Türk urged the international community to halt the shipment of advanced weapons in order to prevent a further humanitarian catastrophe.
