LPG Subsidy: Aadhaar Biometric Authentication Mandatory for Subsidised Refills From Oct 1
About 90% of domestic LPG consumers have completed Aadhaar biometric authentication as the government seeks to curb diversion and leakage.
- On Saturday, the government announced domestic LPG consumers must complete biometric Aadhaar authentication by October 1 to book refills at the regulated, subsidized price.
- Since October 2023, the nationwide authentication drive has utilized multiple channels, aiming to prevent diversion of subsidized cylinders and eliminate ineligible connections.
- As of September 19, nearly 90 per cent of the consumer base—27.43 crore people—have completed verification via delivery, distributors, or mobile apps including IndianOil ONE and HelloBPCL.
- Consumers declining authentication can still receive LPG at market price without subsidy, addressing accumulated under-recoveries at state-owned OMCs exceeding Rs 62,000 crore as of August 31.
- The government continues allocating Rs 30,000 crore annually for under-recovery compensation in 2025-26 and 2026-27; eligible households must complete authentication to maintain access to the regulated subsidized price.
