Strong Northern Lights Forecast: 18 States Might View Aurora Borealis Tonight
- On Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025, NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts northern lights across much of the northern United States as a coronal mass ejection reaches Earth around midday.
- Powerful solar flares and CMEs from the sun, which is in solar cycle 25's maximum, eject superheated plasma that interacts with Earth's magnetic field to produce auroras.
- On the K-index scale, NOAA predicts a 6 out of 9 and assigns strong to severe G-scale warnings including G4 for Nov. 12, covering parts of about 18 states.
- To view the aurora, NOAA recommends the best viewing times are 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and 6 p.m.- 6 a.m. CT, seeking dark locations with a clear northern horizon and using a smartphone camera.
- Sky gazers reported auroras beyond forecast lines in Texas, Florida, and Colorado Tuesday, while forecasters warn severe geomagnetic storms could disrupt radio and GPS communications.
