Stroke survivor celebrates recovery
Ed Hermance recovered after a thrombectomy removed a blood clot caused by recent heart surgery, with fewer than 10% of stroke patients achieving similar outcomes, doctors said.
- On May 17, Ed Hermance suffered a stroke while descending the stairs at his home, and neurologists at UPMC West Shore Hospital found a blood clot in the right side of his brain.
- Earlier this year, his wife and daughter recognized drooping face, slurred speech and left-side weakness and called 911 after doctors said an open-heart surgery to receive a new aortic valve and pacemaker may have caused the clot.
- Dr. Alexander Rovner, neurologist who evaluated Hermance, said he looked great and `Today, Hermance is walking, talking, and even driving again.`
- Hermance plans to attend his granddaughter's graduation in December and has resumed trips to the Finger Lakes and to see Emma at Michigan State University.
- Just days before World Stroke Day, the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation and UPMC Neurological Institute hosted their first Stroke Survivors Reunion; doctors said thrombectomy, developed in the last ten years, removed the clot and less than 10% recover as well as Hermance did.
