Streeting orders review into mental health and ADHD diagnosis

The review will explore if normal emotions are being over-pathologised amid a rise to 4.4 million claimants of sickness benefits for mental health, autism, and ADHD, officials said.

  • On Thursday, Health Secretary Wes Streeting ordered a formal independent review of mental health diagnosis as the Government seeks to tackle the growing welfare bill.
  • Earlier this year, ministers were forced to climb down on planned disability benefit reforms after backlash from more than 100 Labour backbenchers amid rising claims from 4.4 million working-age claimants.
  • Led by experts, the review will be led by Professor Peter Fonagy of University College London with Sir Simon Wessely as vice chairman to test whether normal feelings have become `over-pathologised`.
  • The Department of Health and Social Care said the review is launched alongside 688m funding and warned of NHS pressure, while Mind welcomed the announcement.
  • Amid a renewed push on welfare reform, Sir Keir Starmer signalled on Monday, with findings from the review scheduled for publication later this year.
