Two EF1 tornadoes from the same storm cell damaged structures and caused power outages affecting over 3,500 customers in central Oklahoma, officials reported.
- On January 8, 2026, two radar-confirmed tornadoes struck parts of Oklahoma, damaging structures and leaving more than 3,000 customers without power, officials said.
- Both tornadoes formed from the same severe storm cell moving northeast across central Oklahoma, and multiple tornado warnings were issued during the morning commute and school drop-offs.
- Around 7:30 a.m., radar confirmed tornado debris near North Fourth Street east of Highway 77, and KOCO 5's Michael Armstrong observed fences and limbs down, with the Purcell tornado at least EF1 and winds of 86-110 mph, gusting up to 65 mph.
- Two Purcell schools closed Thursday after power outages, utility crews with City of Edmond, Stillwater and OMPA worked to restore service, and a semitrailer on Interstate 35 near Purcell was blown over causing minor injury.
- Survey teams are still assessing damage in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where the severe threat ended around 8:20 a.m., and all tornado warnings expired by 9:30 a.m., officials said.
