Leonardo, the seventh storm to hit the Iberian Peninsula this year, has dumped months' worth of rain in a few hours on parts of Spain and Portugal. Thousands have been evacuated, and road and rail lines have been cut.
Storm Leonardo, which hit the Iberian Peninsula with heavy rain and winds on Wednesday, has claimed a life in Portugal, and in southern Spain in Andalusia a woman is missing, schools are closed and traffic is paralyzed. An orange warning remains in effect for most of the region today, while the red warning due to exceptional rainfall has been lifted for southern Spain.
The Leonardo Depression is currently affecting Portugal as well as southern Spain.
The Iberian peninsula faces the consequences of the depression and its exceptional rains. The municipal authorities of the municipality of Santarém ordered the "mandatory evacuation" of the riparian areas in the space of seven hours.
