5 August 2026 Stellenbosch Municipality congratulates Councillor Dr Rudi Buys on his uncontested election as Deputy Executive Mayor during a Special Council Meeting held this morning, Wednesday, 5 August 2026. Dr Buys joins the Executive Mayoral Committee with more than three decades of experience in education, public leadership and community service. In earlier roles he served as a spokesman of the Western Cape Minister of Education, as a Youth Commissioner of the Province and as a member of several national advisory councils to President Mbeki. Dr Buys also specialised in education and how to lead transformation at universities and colleges, over time appointed to executive roles and to the governing councils and boards of several public and private institutions. He held appointments among others as faculty dean, chief academic officer, and vice-president. A proud third-generation Stellenbosch resident, Dr Buys has deep roots in the town and its communities. His grandparents and parents studied at Stellenbosch University before dedicating their careers to education and church ministry in the region, while members of his extended family have contributed to Stellenbosch’s renowned wine and hospitality sectors. His commitment to community service began while studying theology at Stellenbosch University, where he served as a peace monitor during South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. In the years that followed, he worked through local churches to promote reconciliation and strengthen relationships between the town’s diverse communities. Over the years, he has remained actively involved in numerous volunteer initiatives, supporting arts festivals, youth development, student leadership programmes and community organisations. After returning to Stellenbosch permanently with his family a decade ago, Dr Buys continued his involvement in local civic affairs. He was elected to serve on his local municipal ward committee in 2021, where he represented the interests of his community, while also serving as chairperson of his local political party branch. Before joining the Stellenbosch Municipal Council, he served as a councillor in the Cape Winelands District Municipality. On his election as Deputy Executive Mayor, Dr Buys said:“To be given this assignment to serve is an extraordinary privilege and deeply humbling. I am thoroughly committed to our town and all its communities, and consider it more than a mission, but a cause, to work alongside our Mayor, fellow councillors and residents to build the proud future we all want for every person who calls Stellenbosch home.” Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser congratulated Dr Buys on his election and welcomed him to the executive leadership of Stellenbosch Municipality: “Dr Buys is a respected leader with an impressive track record in education, governance and public service. His deep understanding of Stellenbosch, together with his passion for community development and service excellence, will be a valuable asset to our municipality. Ashley Du Preez has bid farewell to Kaizer Chiefs after his permanent transfer to his boyhood club Stellenbosch FC was confirmed.
