UPDATE | Eight Milnerton High Pupils Released on R2 000 Bail, Barred From School
Eight pupils charged with assault were granted bail and suspended while facing formal disciplinary hearings and writing exams separately, court set bail at R2,000 each, authorities respond to bullying.
- On Thursday, eight Milnerton High School pupils appeared in Cape Town Magistrate's Court, and the state did not oppose bail because the accused have fixed addresses, no previous convictions and no outstanding warrants, NPA regional spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said.
- The assault occurred in what appears to be a locker room on school premises, with a circulating video showing schoolboys hitting a Grade 10 learner using a belt and hockey stick last week.
- The court ordered the pupils to avoid school and contact complainants, surrender five cellphones, with one outstanding to the investigating officer, and remain on precautionary suspension, said Ntabazalila.
- The court postponed the case to January 20 to allow the eight accused pupils to write exams separately, with the Western Cape Department of Education providing an alternative venue and home study arrangements.
- Teacher unions and political youth groups joined angry parents as police used stun grenades to disperse crowds, while the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education plans a school visit.
