US approves potential sale of Patriot air defense system sustainment to Ukraine

  • On Tuesday, November 18, the U.S. State Department approved a potential $105 million sale to upgrade and sustain Ukraine's existing Patriot air defense systems, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced and notified Congress.
  • Amid daily Russian bombardment, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last month Ukraine needed another 25 Patriot systems, and this month he said Ukraine had received more systems, while the State Department said the sale will improve Ukraine's ability to meet current and future threats.
  • The upgrade package converts M901 to M903 launchers, enabling them to carry up to 12 PAC-3 MSE missiles and includes system upgrades, spare parts, ground support, training by RTX Corp and Lockheed Martin.
  • The package will help Ukraine continue shooting down missiles, and Ukraine will pay for Patriot upgrades, while DSCA said the changes won't shift the regional military balance.
  • Production limits mean nations hesitate to transfer Patriots, needed in the Middle East and Taiwan, while Germany and the U.S. have supplied systems since April 2023 amid $67 billion in aid, President Donald Trump criticized.
