South Sudan Conflict: MSF Says Staff Missing After Air Strikes Hit Hospital in Jonglei
MSF evacuated the hospital before the government airstrike destroyed supplies and left 250,000 people in Jonglei state without healthcare, with a facility looted the same day.
- On Tuesday, Médecins Sans Frontières said its hospital in Lankien, Jonglei state, was hit in an airstrike by government of South Sudan forces overnight, destroying the main warehouse and causing minor injuries to one MSF staff member.
- Following warnings, MSF evacuated and discharged patients hours before the attack, after sharing GPS coordinates and amid humanitarian access restrictions in opposition-held parts of Jonglei since December.
- In the afternoon, MSF reported its Pieri centre was looted by unknown assailants, rendering it unusable as colleagues from Lankien and Pieri fled with local communities.
- MSF said it will 'make the necessary decisions to protect the safety of our staff and healthcare facilities' after being targeted; eight targeted attacks in 2025 led to closures and suspended activities in Jonglei, Upper Nile and Central Equatoria.
- The repeated pattern of targeted attacks, including eight incidents in 2025, has endangered MSF's operations across seven states and two administrative areas, despite providing over 830,000 consultations and screening 107,000 children.
