Sri Lanka unveils US$320 million subsidy to offset energy costs
The package includes fuel, electricity and fertilizer subsidies as Sri Lanka seeks to shield vulnerable households from higher import costs.
- On Tuesday, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced a $320 million relief package for farmers, fishermen, and low-income households struggling with soaring energy costs from the West Asia conflict.
- Rising energy costs followed US-Israeli military actions against Iran since February 28, which forced retail fuel prices up by a third and electricity tariffs up to 40 per cent.
- Support measures include absorbing 30 per cent of urea fertilizer costs for farmers, providing fuel subsidies of up to $300 monthly for fishermen, and issuing $25 cash grants to low-income families.
- Returning to a five-day work week on Wednesday, the government cancelled the four-day energy-saving schedule as Dissanayake negotiates fuel and fertilizer imports from India and Russia.
- Sri Lanka faces a critical window until April 11 to secure Russian supplies after President Trump temporarily lifted sanctions, while Dissanayake expects to draw down $700 million from the International Monetary Fund next month.
