Sri Lanka Takes Control of Second Iranian Vessel a Day After US Sinks Warship
Sri Lanka took control of the Iranian navy ship IRIS Bushehr to protect it from further attacks after a US submarine torpedo strike killed 84 sailors, officials said.
- Wednesday, Sri Lanka's navy offloaded 208 sailors from the Irins Bushehr and assumed control after it requested port entry, following the sister ship's attack.
- Maintaining neutrality, Sri Lanka said it urged dialogue while responding to the IRIS Bushehr, which requested port entry due to engine trouble after recently participating in a naval exercise in eastern India.
- On Thursday, medical staff reported 32 rescued Iranians remain under tight security at a hospital, with morgues limited to 25 bodies, prompting refrigerated container setup.
- Colombo will not host the stricken vessel because of safety and insurance concerns, and authorities are continuing searches for missing sailors as inquests proceed, officials said.
- The ICRC said it was assessing the situation and working with local authorities, while the US defence secretary called the strike the first since World War II.
