Sri Lanka facility fire claims 12 lives; director arrested for negligence
The unregistered home was overcrowded, and officials said 51 residents were rescued as police arrested the director on suspicion of negligence.
A fire at an elders' home in Anguruwatota, Sri Lanka, killed 12 residents and injured eight others late Wednesday, police said Thursday. The blaze devastated the facility, leaving 51 rescued.
The unregistered facility was severely overcrowded, housing 71 people in a space with beds for about 15. The home also sheltered people with mental illnesses, despite National Secretariat warnings to follow laws and guidelines.
Police spokesman Fredrick Wootler confirmed Fifty-one residents were rescued from the blaze. Authorities arrested the home's director on suspicion of causing deaths through negligence following the fire.
Chathura Mihudum, director of the National Secretariat, stated the Government had previously instructed management to follow laws and guidelines. The facility failed to comply with these regulatory warnings.
Associated Press footage showed the building gutted by fire with charred furniture and bodies discovered nearby. Local authorities continue investigating the fatal incident as evidence is reviewed.
