Spirits giant Diageo taps former Tesco chief Dave Lewis for CEO role
- On Nov 10, Diageo appointed former Tesco boss Dave Lewis as chief executive, ending a months-long search and hiring an outsider to guide the world's largest spirits maker.
- Sir Dave will take on the role on January 1, replacing Nik Jhangiani, as Diageo faces weaker sales and a downgraded outlook for fiscal 2026, the board said.
- The board highlighted Lewis's experience in consumer businesses, noting he led Tesco from 2014 to 2020 and spent nearly 30 years at Unilever, and said, `We are delighted to welcome Dave as Diageo's new chief executive`.
- Deirdre Mahlan, Interim CFO supporting the transition, will continue through the handover while analysts noted Nik Jhangiani as a respected finance chief and CEO material during the interim period.
- Beyond retail, Sir Dave Lewis holds trustee roles at The Royal Foundation and World Wildlife Fund UK and is a non-executive director of PepsiCo, after his 2021 knighthood for business contributions.
