SPD threatens with legal regulation in the case of minimum wage

If the responsible commission does not raise the minimum wage to 15 euros, the SPD wants to enforce this by law. However, the CDU rejects such intervention.

In the debate on an early increase in the minimum wage, the SPD has regressed. Secretary-General Miersch threatened to intervene by law if the competent independent commission rejects an increase to 15 euros.

Since 2014, the minimum wage commission has made recommendations. In 2022, the traffic lights set the minimum wage higher by law. Now the SPD is once again poking to 15 euros – and is also threatening CDU and CSU with a legal definition if there is no agreement in a future coalition.

The minimum wage is to be set independently by a commission, but the Social Democrats insist on an increase to 15 euros. SPD Secretary General Miersch reminds us that politics has already intervened.

A commission is responsible for setting the minimum wage. If their recommendation does not correspond to the result desired by the SPD, Secretary General Matthias Miersch wants to help in other ways.

The SPD has threatened to set the minimum wage by policy if the relevant Commission does not recommend an increase to EUR 15 next year.
