Spain will not join Trump's Board of Peace, PM says

Spain, citing its commitment to the United Nations and international law, joins other traditional U.S. allies in declining participation in Trump’s Board of Peace initiative.

  • On January 22, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Spain will not join the Board of Peace and told reporters `We appreciate the invitation, but we decline`.
  • Citing commitments to international law and the U.N., Spain explained joining would conflict with Madrid's multilateralism and noted the board does not include the Palestinian Authority.
  • The Board of Peace launched in Davos with Israel and Gulf states such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, plus Argentina, Bahrain, Morocco, Pakistan and Turkey, but lacked Canada, Britain and most EU members on January 22.
  • A U.N. Security Council resolution endorsed the board, and U.N. spokesperson Rolando Gomez said engagement would be limited, while Trump withdrew Canada's invitation after Davos, and allies like Britain, France, and Italy will not join for now.
  • Built from Mr Trump's Gaza peace plan, the board aims to broker ceasefires and requires $1 billion from each permanent member, Trump said, `Once this board is completely formed, we can do pretty much whatever we want to do.
