Spain Busts Neo-Nazi Group on Canada’s Terror List
Spanish police arrested three members of a highly radicalized cell linked to The Base, seizing firearms and neo-Nazi materials during raids in Castellon province.
- On Monday Spanish police said they broke up a cell of The Base, arresting three suspects last week including the leader now in custody on terrorism charges.
- Rinaldo Nazzaro, who founded the group in 2018, later moved to Saint Petersburg and one month ago urged `targeted attacks with the aim of bringing down Western democratic institutions`.
- During raids in the eastern province of Castellon, officers seized two firearms, ammunition and books with Adolf Hitler on the cover after an investigation launched earlier this year found a highly radicalised Spanish cell.
- The leader is now in custody on charges including membership, recruitment, indoctrination, training with terrorist aims, and illegal possession of weapons; the 2020 FBI arrest of Patrik Jordan Mathews set precedent.
- Last year the European Union added The Base to its terrorist list, imposing sanctions including a travel ban and asset freeze; the Southern Poverty Law Center calls it an antisemitic, white nationalist network.
