Southport stabbing survivor 'horrified' at victims' records being accessed by 48 hospital staff
An internal audit found 64 suspicious accesses, and 48 staff faced disciplinary action after records were viewed without good reason.
Forty-Eight staff members at the Liverpool Group Trust inappropriately accessed medical records of Southport attack victims, the Health Service Journal reported on Friday.
An internal audit identified 64 suspicious access cases following the July 2024 attack, with four staff leaving before investigation and 12 found to have legitimate reasons for access.
Yoga instructor Leanne Lucas, a survivor, said she is "absolutely devastated and horrified that my privacy has been invaded." She criticized staff for abusing their position of trust.
NHS trust chief executive James Sumner apologized for the distress, stating the decision not to inform patients earlier was made "taking into consideration the potential psychological impact" at the time.
Legal director Nicola Brook, representing survivors at the Southport Inquiry, called the breach "a truly unbelievable breach of privacy," arguing it reflects a culture requiring real consequences.
