Hate groups in the US decline but their influence grows, report shows
- The Southern Poverty Law Center released its 2024 Hate & Extremism Report on white nationalist and extremist activity in the United States.
- The report noted a 5% decrease in the total count of hate and extremist groups following a peak in 2023, although their overall impact remains unchanged.
- The report's release coincided with Aki Maehara, a 71-year-old Japanese American professor at East Los Angeles College, making his first public appearance post-injury from a hit-and-run hate crime on April 29 in Montebello.
- Maehara reported hearing a racial slur before being hit by a driver who then fled the scene; he sustained a concussion, a fractured cheekbone, neck injuries, and extensive bruising and swelling. A fundraiser has since collected nearly $77,000 to support him.
- The report highlights far-right disinformation efforts, threats to election workers, and the rise of Christian supremacist movements toward authoritarianism amid ongoing hate group activity.
