South Korea’s Lee criticises Israel detentions, says actions ‘way out of line’
Lee said the detentions of three Korean nationals aboard Gaza-bound aid ships lacked legal basis and urged Seoul to review an ICC warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu.
On Wednesday, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung criticized Israel over the detention of South Korean activists aboard Gaza-bound aid vessels, calling the arrests "way out of line" and "not valid under international law."
Israeli forces intercepted the Lina al-Nabulsi near Gaza early Wednesday, detaining South Korean activist Kim Ah-hyun and Korean-American activist Jonathan Victor Lee; the seizure followed Monday's takeover of a vessel carrying Kim Dong-hyeon.
Detained activists are being transferred to an Israeli vessel serving as a "floating prison" en route to Ashdod; the flotilla was organized by IHH, which previously organized the Mavi Marmara.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the navy for "thwarting a malicious plan" designed to break Gaza's isolation, while the Israeli Foreign Ministry called the flotilla "another publicity stunt" serving Hamas.
President Lee also believes European countries may be willing to arrest Netanyahu under International Criminal Court warrants, while the row threatens to compound a diplomatic crisis with Ireland, which closed the Israeli embassy in Dublin in 2024.
