Davis Kern Scores 24 to Help South Dakota State Upset Kansas State 68-66 in Season Opener
Kern hit five 3-pointers and scored 24 points as the Jackrabbits held off a late Kansas State rally.
On Tuesday, South Dakota State defeated Kansas State 68-66 in Manhattan, Kansas, in the season opener. Davis Kern led the Jackrabbits with 24 points, including five 3-pointers.
Wildcats coach Casey Alexander made his debut with 13 new players on the roster, led by Pape N'Diaye's 18 points. The Jackrabbits sought to revitalize their program after a losing season last year.
SDSU shot 44 percent for the game, with Jon Mekonnen and Kalen Garry each scoring 14 points. The visitors built a 35-28 halftime lead to withstand Kansas State's second-half offensive surge.
This victory marks the Jackrabbits' first win over a Big 12 team since 2020. Second-year coach Bryan Petersen said, "Our will to win was great, and we just stayed together."
South Dakota State hosts Briar Cliff on Friday as part of a double header. Kansas State will look to rebound when they host Cal State Northridge the same day.
