S.C. State Representative Charged with Pointing Firearm at a Person
The charge stems from a parking-lot confrontation at a primary polling place, and court records say Rivers was released on a personal recognizance bond.
On Friday, South Carolina State Representative Michael Rivers was arrested and charged with pointing and presenting a firearm, then booked into the Colleton County Detention Center before release on a personal recognizance bond.
The State Law Enforcement Division alleges Rivers drew a weapon during an argument on June 9 at the Green Pond Community Center, with the charge based on parking lot video and witness statements from the polling site.
Rivers reportedly confronted the uncle of Shannon DeLoach, the Democrat who defeated him in the primary with 54% of the vote; DeLoach told the Gazette that Rivers brandished a firearm before driving away.
Denying any wrongdoing, Rivers told the Gazette, "I'm innocent and feel this accusation from my political opponent represents politics at its worst," while facing up to five years in prison if convicted.
The representative, who turns 68 next week, faces Republican Shelley Gay Yuhas in the Nov. 3 general election while maintaining he remains a good representative for his district spanning Colleton and Beaufort counties.
