Sony Music AI Deepfake Takedowns Top 260K, Report Says
Sony says the tracks imitate artists’ voices and likenesses without permission, as Deezer reports more than 90,000 fully AI-generated uploads daily.
Sony Music requested the removal of more than 260,000 AI deepfake tracks from digital platforms, citing unauthorized use of artist voices and likenesses without permission.
The volume nearly doubled from about 135,000 takedown requests in March, as Sony claims the deepfake problem is "happening at scale" and harming artists and fans.
Dennis Kooker, Sony's President of Global Digital Business, estimated 5% to 10% of streams could be fraudulent, noting deepfakes are "demand-driven" and exploit artists during promotion cycles.
French streaming service Deezer reported more than 90,000 AI-generated tracks are uploaded daily, a figure that presumably exceeded 100,000 by July.
On Capitol Hill, the music industry continues lobbying for the NO FAKES Act, which would authorize voice and likeness rights in the United States for the first time.
Sony Music says it has asked platforms to remove more than 260,000 AI-generated songs impersonating its artists. Data from Deezer shows that AI-generated music accounts for more than half of new uploads, but only 1-3% of listens.
