Second Tanker in Three Months Hijacked Off Yemen by Suspected Somali Pirates
Seven gunmen seized the Tanzanian-flagged MT Asana, marking the second vessel hijacked off Yemen since May, officials said.
The Tanzanian-flagged tanker Asana was hijacked in the Gulf of Aden off Yemen on Friday. The UKMTO reported the "vessel was boarded by unauthorised personnel" as it sailed east, advising other ships to transit with caution.
Seven Somali gunmen from Garacad seized the tanker, which departed from Mukalla, Yemen, en route to Bosaso, Puntland. Officials from Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland region identified the attackers as Somali.
Boarded 65 nautical miles off Yemen while traveling at about 2 knots, the Asana was moving slowly in the Gulf of Aden according to public vessel-tracking data. The unusually slow speed was consistent with earlier distress signal reports.
Puntland officials have not publicly commented on the incident, while the hijacked tanker has been moved to waters off Caluula in the Bari region of Somalia. No immediate information regarding crew nationality has been released.
Somali piracy in the Gulf of Aden has resurfaced after attacks nearly disappeared three years ago following concerted naval operations. The region's lighter naval protection compared to the Indian Ocean may explain the renewed threat.
The Tanzanian-flagged oil tanker MT Asana was reportedly hijacked by seven armed Somali pirates off the coast of Yemen. Following the incident, the ship was towed to Kalula, in Somalia's Puntland region. According to reports, the tanker also sent a distress alert during the hijacking.
