Small plane crashes in the Kenyan coastal region of Kwale, with 12 people feared dead

A plane crash in Kwale killed 11 people, mostly foreign tourists en route to Maasai Mara National Reserve, as the aircraft burst into flames leaving a charred wreckage.
Departing from Diani airstrip, the pilot failed to communicate and the airport control tower tried to reach him for 30 minutes before the wreckage was found in a hilly and forested area about 25 miles from Diani.
Mombasa Air Safari said eight Hungarian and two German passengers plus the Kenyan pilot were onboard and killed, while the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority earlier reported 12 people onboard the Cessna Caravan-type aircraft.
Investigating agencies are inspecting the scene, with Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde saying the crash happened at 05:30 a.m., while the ministry of transport said 8.35 a.m. local time.
Heavy rain affected coastal Kenya at the time, and a 2018 ICAO safety oversight audit found Kenya fell below the global average in accident investigation while the Maasai Mara National Reserve attracts many tourists including for the annual wildebeest migration.
