Ukrainian Drone Interceptors Down Rare Russian Forpost-R UAV Over Kursk Region
The downing was only the second by the Unmanned Systems Forces, which said it has hit or destroyed more than 45,000 Russian drones since June 2025.
- On July 27, Unmanned Systems Forces Commander Robert Magyar Brovdi reported that Ukrainian drone operators destroyed a rare Russian Forpost-R over Russia's Kursk region at 4,300 meters altitude using a Ukrainian-developed Chaklun-KM interceptor drone.
- The Forpost-R remains exceptionally rare, with this destruction marking only the sixth confirmed downing since Russia's full-scale invasion began and the second credited to the 414th Separate Brigade Madyar's Birds.
- Since the Unmanned Systems Forces Grouping was established on June 11, 2025, Commander Brovdi reported pilots have struck or destroyed 45,067 enemy strike and reconnaissance UAVs, alongside 9,186 Shahed- and Gerbera-type loitering munitions.
- Anti-Drone interceptors are playing an expanding role within Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, while Operation MoLoChKa recently targeted 159 Russian shadow fleet vessels across the Azov and Black seas over 12 days in July 2026.
- Rarity of Forpost-R losses underscores the strategic value of specialized interception capabilities, as anti-drone interceptors establish themselves as critical assets within Ukraine's broader air defense framework against high-value Russian targets.
