Germany surges to fourth largest global military spender: SIPRI

The world's military expenditures have only been in one direction for years: Up! The FRG has become the state with the fourth highest armaments expenditures – behind the USA, China and Russia, but still ahead of India.

Record expenditures on armaments form a stable foundation for a modern defense capability. However, for a real "turn of time", Germany and the Bundeswehr need an ability that other countries have long since taken for granted.

In 2024, military expenditure has risen as much as it has not been for years. What about the impact of Europe?

Europe has entered a period of high and increasing military spending, “which is likely to continue for the foreseeable future," Lorenzo Scarazzato, a researcher at SIPRI’s Military Expenditure and Arms Productions Program, told Breaking Defense.

Only three other countries spend even more on their military: Germany increased its armaments investments massively in 2024. The Sipri Institute speaks of a "leadership role in European defence".
