Singapore MPs Back Motion Deeming Pritam Singh Unfit to Be Opposition Leader
Parliament expressed regret over Pritam Singh’s conduct after his conviction for lying to a committee, emphasizing integrity standards for the Leader of the Opposition.
- After a three-hour debate, the House approved a motion on Jan 14 that Pritam Singh's conduct and conviction render him unsuitable to continue as Leader of the Opposition.
- Raeesah Khan first lied in Parliament on Aug 3, 2021 and later told the Committee of Privileges that WP leaders advised her to continue the claim, leading to her $35,000 fine and Singh's Feb 17, 2025 conviction upheld on Dec 4, 2025.
- Courts found that Pritam Singh told Ms Khan to `take it to the grave` and guided her to stick to the lie, and he paid a $14,000 fine on the spot.
- All 11 WP MPs formally recorded their disagreement while PAP MPs and nine NMPs backed the motion, and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong holds the decision to retain Singh as LO.
- Framing the motion, Indranee Rajah said it aimed to uphold Parliament's integrity and stressed the House was not imposing further penalties since the courts had already fined Pritam Singh.
